What is the capacity of a mug?

Very popular for several years, the mug is a large cup. It is generally used to enjoy hot drinks such as coffee, tea, hot chocolate or even soup. It can also be used to make cakes, called "mugcakes".

To meet their different uses and especially all needs, mugs come in different sizes, with different capacities. What is the average capacity of a mug? What are the sizes of the various models? Find out everything you need to know about mugs in this article.

History of the mug

The oldest origins of the mug date back to the creation of the first cups, made between 6,500 and 3,000 BC. These were made from bone. As technology evolved, models made of wood and then clay appeared. With the invention of the potter's wheel, some of these cups could be fitted with handles. Pottery indeed facilitated the production of this cylindrical container.

With the invention of porcelain in 600 AD in China, the rims of these cups became thinner and the decorations more refined.

Since then, this Asian tableware has diversified widely, to conquer the entire planet. Mugs are very popular. Today, they have multiple shapes, aspects, and decorations. Less fragile than traditional cups, they can be made of ceramic, porcelain, metal or glass. Above all, these teacups or coffee cups come in all sizes.

Different types of containers

The English term "mug" has become popularized to refer to a container larger than a cup but smaller than a mug. The average capacity of a mug is 350 ml. This is twice the size of a coffee cup. More precisely, most mug models contain between 240 and 350 ml. However, capacities tend to be larger, between 470 and 590 ml.

The choice of the capacity of your mug will depend on your use, depending on whether you take it with you, whether you use it at home or in the office, in transport or not. Similarly, some will be more suitable for certain drinks.

Small mugs, up to 25 cl, are similar to coffee or tea cups. They can be used as espresso mugs. They can accommodate these drinks at any time of your day.

The standard size, between 25 and 40 cl, allows hot drink drinkers to satisfy their desire for coffee or other drinks throughout the day. Among these standard mugs, we find in particular tea cups or coffee cups. They are in fact the ideal size for maximum versatility.

For larger consumers, there are XXL mugs to hold more liquid. They thus keep large quantities of hot drinks. They can also be used for soups.

Among all these varieties, there are mugs with complementary features. Travel mugs, with lids, can for example be taken everywhere without the risk of being knocked over. You can also opt for insulated mugs so that your drink stays hot or cold for longer.
